The 22B is a limited edition STI model that was Produced in 1998 to celebrate Subaru's series of World Rally Championship victories and its 40th anniversary.

Starting with a standard Impreza WRX STi version IV Type R coupe, the 22B notably features the WRC car's "Sonic Blue" paint job, a 2.2-liter stroked version of its turbocharged boxer engine, Bilstein suspension -- as well as its defining feature: WRC-inspired widebody fender flares never before seen on a factory Impreza.

The name 22B itself is hexidecimal for "555", referring to the Subaru's WRC sponsor, BAT 555, in the years leading up to the 22B's creation.

Production totalled 424 cars. 400 individually numbered JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) vehicles, and 24 "un numbered" cars. These un numbered cars include 5 cars delivered to Australia, 16 "Type UK" cars, and 3 for ProDrive team members. The Type UK cars featured a number of subtle differences, including special PIAA spotlight kits, 3.9 diffs (replacing 4.44 in the JDM cars) and underbody rustproofing. It is understood that car 13 was brought into the US for promotional purposes, however its final fate is unclear.(was it crushed?)
